      SOUTHWATER ONE

      TELFORD, SHROPSHIRE

      About this project

Southwater One is part of a £250m regeneration project in Telford. This new build comprises of a new library, a coffee shop and Telford and Wrekin Council's main advice centre.

It has been called Telford's "flagship community building" by the local authority, with a lake and public spaces also part of the development. The library is 'state of the art' and the whole development has transformed the local area.

      THE CHALLENGE

As with all projects of this nature, design and specification had to be balanced with overall budget costs which were already under pressure.

Spurlite was called upon to help to provide an affordable solution to the lighting design requirements and aesthetics which were integral to the success and overall appearance of the completed building.

      THE SOLUTION

Working together with the project team Spurlite developed a set of alternative products from our standard ranges and also produced a range of custom built products to meet the requirements of the specification at an affordable cost.

Utilising the expertise of several of our production partners we were able to develop luminaires that fulfilled all the technical and aesthetic criteria but at a cost acceptable to the project budget. During a series of meetings in which we met with the architect, interior designer and end client we shaped a portfolio of products that the client found as acceptable alternatives to those originally specified. Samples of the products were ordered and supplied so that the client could be absolutely sure of the aesthetics and quality aspects of the fittings.

These standard products included; Modul Lambda Line, Bell PC3, DOT LED downlights, Tornado weatherproofs, Florenzo bulheads, Avaiator bulkhead, EYELID luminaires, Firefly 3W LED emergency downlights and Versex edge lit Led exit sign.

Custom products included PAP-DRUM a LED circular suspended drum fitting with 2 diameters (500mm and 700mm), PAP-CYL suspended cylindrical luminaires with 2 different lengths (600mm and 900mm) for 2x14w T5 and 2x21w T5 lamps, PAP-Globe suspended globes with 1x32W and 2x32w gear (300mm and 400mm diameter) and an acoustic raft system developed with SAS . Many of the products had DALI drivers and all the emergency products had DALI empro control gear to allow interface with a central controlled lighting management system.

      THE RESULTS

The end client was delighted with the outcome of the project and the interior design team were happy that their initial concept had been retained without compromise. The main contractor, Morgan Sindall, and the Electrical contractor, Dodd Group, moved on to do a similar type of building in Towcester. The client team from Towcester visited the Southwater One site and liked the lighting concept so much that it lead to Spurlite being engaged on the Towcester Civic office project to develop a similar design for the library section of that project.
