      About this project

This project for a new science and sports block originally started life as a design utilising fluorescent luminaires. The client then decided that they would invest in a more efficient building and a LED lighting design was developed.

The building has very few suspended ceilings and utilises the building slab as method of natural cooling. The project requirements therefore necessitated the use of an illuminated acoustic raft to all science labs and the dance studio.

Spurlite developed its existing suspended acoustic panel to utilise LED technology. In conjunction with additional acoustic panels as part of the building construction the rafts provide all the necessary technical lighting and acoustic requirements required for a school science lab, whilst offering maximum energy efficiency for the client.

A bulkhead was constructed across one side of each classroom to accommodate plant. LED downlighters from the Prettus range were installed as this low height product ensures no clash with the plant in the void. The luminaires supplied in all classrooms have DALI dimming drivers which link to a lighting control system to maximise energy saving opportunities through use of absence detection and use of natural daylight.

Through-out the corridors and toilet areas LED downlights are installed, the corridors using the Prettus downlight which offered a very shallow luminaire to meet the needs of restricted voids within these spaces. The toilets used the DOT 9100 range of fittings to provide a neat lighting solution.

Within the staircases the architect and client wanted to move away from traditional circular wall mounted luminaires, the Spurlite solution was from our Greenstar LED range and consisted of 900mm long extruded aluminium luminaires with direct and indirect lighting distribution and integral emergency. The final result being a well-lit and bright circulation space.

Offices have a mixture of Freyn II LED luminaires where suspended ceiling were available and Lambda LED suspended luminaires were the ceilings are open to the slab. Finally, sports changing rooms and science prep areas used a recessed IP54 Modular luminaire from the Relax XTP range.
