De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel

After a recent plant room failure that caused extensive water damage to the ballroom of Southampton’s 4 star De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel, an opportunity was identified to replace eighty-six 70w HQI downlights with a more cost-effective, energy efficient option.

The hotel staff were keen to ensure that any new downlights could be operated using the original Lutron phase dimming panel, providing a fully dimmable solution for the room, without having to re-install a new panel.

The Challenge

To provide low energy downlights with the right lighting quality, offering full dimmable capabilities using their existing dimming panel system. In addition, there was an ornate ceiling, which would restrict any simple installation and preclude CFL fittings.

The Solution

WF Electrical, the local electrical distributor in Southampton, called in Spurlite to provide a solution to replace the downlights. With no control pair going to the installed fittings and lack of access due to the ornate solid ceiling, Spurlite’s Starburst downlight range was suggested. Dimmable with any leading or trailing edge dimmer once the minimum load has been met, Starburst would easily operate with the existing Lutron control panel.

Running at 16W, there would be considerable energy saving, with no reduction in the quality of light. Easy to install, the Starburst range also offered the hotel the total dimming control they required with a 50,000 hour rated life and a 5 year warranty as standard.

The Results

Barry Williams, manager of WF Southampton says “The hotel were so pleased with the level of service from Spurlite’s technical lighting team and the overall performance of Starburst, that they have asked for twenty two custom built wall mounted uplights to be installed. The uplights will also incorporate the Starburst modules, allowing them to be controlled in via the Lutron rack.

Like many hotels, the Grand Harbour converts their large room into three smaller meeting rooms and these uplights will be mounted around the perimeter of the ballroom, ensuring that the relevant standard of lighting is available for all functions.

This solution offered minimum disruption and has given the hotel complete flexibility in the lighting of their ballroom, it has allowed them to make significant energy and maintenance savings. Their clients will appreciate the quality of lighting now supplied and will help to maintain the Grand Harbour Hotel as a top class facility”.

This phase of the project has since been completed with the desired results being achieved.
