      About this project

Faced with a very loose specification, Spurlite worked in conjunction with Electec Ltd, to develop a lighting installation for Calthorpe Academy SEN School. All luminaires used are LED to provide the optimum efficiency of the design.

The new building consists of teaching spaces, gymnasium and canteen which required lighting to meet the needs of SEN pupils. Initially the first floor teaching spaces were due to be open to the soffit, but the amount of services with the space dictated that a plaster board ceiling was required.

Spurlite utilised the Freyn II range of luminaires and introduced a slim line surface version of the fitting which match recessed luminaires used elsewhere in the building. The slim line fitting did not intrude into the space and created continuity with other areas of the site.

On the ground floor where the open ceiling areas remained the Lambda LED direct indirect fitting was introduced, the uplighting from the luminaire illuminating the services above create an interesting and visually stimulating environment.

Circulation spaces and canteen area are lit with the DOT range of downlights. The smaller diameter DOT 9156 is used with a flush frosted glass to create a wash of light across the ceilings which brightens the space. Florenzo LED fittings to the staircase and Plast H fittings to the storage areas complete the interior installation.

The exterior lighting consists of Megin lanterns to the carpark and play area with Lume bulkheads to the building perimeter.
